A leading expert in medieval and early Renaissance theatre and pageantry, and its historical, social, and intellectual contexts, and of the documentary and archival evidence for its organisation and performance. She has she pioneered the recreation of medieval performance style with a series of productions of plays in venues as close as possible to the originals. More recently, she has carried out ground-breaking research on digital images, using forensic document-examination techniques with different light spectra, and ‘virtual restoration’ by image manipulation of high-resolution scans to recover readings from underneath later erasures and rewriting. Her numerous publications include Masks and Masking in Medieval and Tudor England (with Sarah Carpenter,2002), which was awarded the David Bevington Prize for the best book published in early theatre, and several scholarly editions, including the Chester mystery plays and a comparative electronic edition of the t
