Grounds for election
Professor Nicholls has published widely on the buildings, contents, layout & networks of the Classical world’s great libraries. Ongoing research on the City of Rome and its built environment has lead to a layered digital reconstruction allowing 3D immersive exploration of interior and exterior spaces. This collaborative work has produced teaching tools engaging varied audiences with the Classics. He was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy 2017. Many works include “Public libraries in the cities of the Roman Empire” in G. Woolf, J. König, & K. Oikonomopolou (eds.) Ancient Libraries, 2013; ‘Galen & Libraries in the Peri Alupias’ Journal of Roman Studies (2011); 'Bookish places in Imperial Rome: bookshops & the urban landscape of learning” in S. Adams (ed.) Scholastic Culture in the Hellenistic & Roman Eras, 2019. Architectural modelling work with Foster + Partners (2021) was used in museums in Narbonne, London & Amsterdam.
