Grounds for election
Alongside his professional career as barrister and academic working in Africa, the Pacific islands and West Indies advising Commonwealth governments on constitutional law, Peter has specialised in Canon Law as an ecclesiastical historian in recording and preserving church monuments in these territories. Over some 30 years he has studied West Indian colonial history, particularly as it relates to often conflicting commercial, civil, military, legal and ecclesiastical attitudes towards slavery, both pre and post emancipation. This research has been pursued, inter alia, through surviving church monuments, of which he is currently preparing a catalogue for St Vincent and the Grenadines islands, including biographical records of the commemorated. He follows in the long tradition of the dedicated amateur historian/antiquary and conservator, and is a member of a number of archaeological and conservation organisations at national as well as local level both in the West Indies and in Britain.
