Grounds for election

Dr Mitchell – who was a lecturer in English literature at UCL for 25 years – has an interest in local history stretching back 40 years. In the 1980s she researched the histories of Landmark Trust properties. Her authoritative work on the provincial novelists, Caroline Clive, Charlotte M.Yonge and Elizabeth Gaskell led to extensive archival research in numerous English counties. The history of Herefordshire, to which she moved in 2018, has been a long-standing interest. In 2011, with Julian Mitchell FSA, she co-authored ‘The True Anti-Pamela: Scandal and Skulduggery in 1730-5 Ross and Monmouthshire’, The Monmouthshire Antiquary. Since 2020 she has written histories of the churches of St Devereux and Wormbridge. She also established Jane Austen’s aunt as the subject of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, following wide-ranging archival research. This discovery reached large audiences through articles in the TLS and Burlington Magazine, co-authored with her daughter, Gwendolen Mitchell.
