She is a specialist in art and archaeology, and since the early 1990s has undertaken research on museum collections and fieldwork in Russia, in particular the Zalavruga prehistoric rock art complex in Russian Karelia. In 2018, this led to a major exhibition at the Bangudae Museum, South Korea, which has depictions of whaling common with Zalavruga. She also works in Japan, is a member of the Shinano River Project and is conducting research into Jomon Period figurines. She has published widely, including her 2020 volume, The Archaeology of Seeing, exploring relationships between neuroscience, art and archaeology. This theme she developed at the 2017 Cambridge conference on Art and the Brain, published as a special issue of Open Archaeology.
