Dr Clarke is an experienced architectural historian, with 17 years working for the then English Heritage (Senior Investigator in the Conservation and Protection Department) and the RCHME (Field Recorder, Architectural Survey). He is the author of an acclaimed monograph 'Early Structural Steel in London Buildings: A Discreet Revolution' (English Heritage, 2014) and numerous other scholarly papers in academic books and journals on major designers, including John Nash and Owen Jones. Dr Clarke is a frequently invited speaker at conferences on architectural and construction history. His recent consultancy work has included investigation of the fixing of the terracotta facade to Alfred Waterhouse's Natural History Museum, and a survey of heritage features at all 270 London Underground stations. This work was carried out whilst simultaneously carrying out research at Cambridge for a part-time PhD on English office buildings of the 1918-39 period, having won a Collaborative Doctoral Award.
