Grounds for election

Akinwumi Ogundiran is Professor of History at Northwestern University. His research interests focus on emergent communities, social complexity, and cultural history in West Africa over the past 2000 years, using archaeological, historical, ethnographic, and material science methods. He is Editor-in-Chief of the African Archaeological Review, and President-Elect of the Society of Africanist Archaeologists. His authored, edited, and co-edited publications include Archaeology and History in Ilare District, 1200-1900 (2002); Precolonial Nigeria (2005); Archaeology of Atlantic Africa and the African Diaspora (2007); Power and Landscape in Atlantic West Africa (2012); Materialities of Ritual in the Black Atlantic (2014), and The Yoruba: A New History (2020), winner of the Vinson Sutlive Prize & the Isaac Delano Prize. Dr. Ogundiran is a Senior Fellow of Gardens and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks and was recently elected to the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
