Grounds for election
The research of Pieterjan Deckers concerns the medieval material culture and coastal landscapes around the North Sea. For his PhD, he worked on the social and economic connections of the inhabitants of coastal Flanders and Zeeland during the Early Middle Ages, including the emporium of Walichrum. From 2017 to 2020, he was a postdoc at Aarhus University, excavating at the Viking-Age trading site Ribe and studying its finds. Most recently, he is focusing on high and late medieval material culture found in the medieval towns of present-day Flanders. In 2023, he took up a tenure-track position as assistant professor in Historical Archaeology at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
During his PhD, he started developing connections with hobby metal detectorists, a preoccupation which continues to this day and resulted in a series of co-authored publications. He is a strong proponent of a collaborative approach, and is a co-founder of the European Public Finds Recording Network.
