Sam Rose is a critical thinker about art of all periods, with an expert knowledge of its historiography. Since 2016, he has held a permanent academic post in Art History at the University of St Andrews. His first book, Art and Form (Penn State, 2019), traced the development of art history and related academic practices in the early 20th-century in Britain. Art and Form showed how ‘modernist’ art theory was intertwined with developments in the study of earlier art. Sam’s second book, Interpreting Art (UCL Press, 2022), examines commonalities in the way that writers on historical objects tend to work, with examples ranging from Pliny and Homer through to early modern art historical ‘classics’ such as Vasari, Winckelmann, Goethe, and Ruskin, and on to the present day. Sam has also published widely in peer-reviewed journals. His work contributes importantly to the encouragement of debate about art and the understanding of cultural heritage championed by the Society of Antiquaries.
