Grounds for election

He has carried out, and published, important excavations at Maya sites in Honduras and Guatemala over the past twenty years. Most notable have been his discovery and documentation of the San Bartolo murals, which have transformed our knowledge and understanding of early Maya art and the emergence of kingship in the late first millennium BC. He has pioneered new techniques in satellite reconnaissance and remote sensing in concert with NASA, and in the in situ preservation of mural art in tropical environments. His current research at the city of Xultun has yielded the oldest known Maya lunar calendar. He has published articles in leading scientific and archaeological journals, including Antiquity, Science, and the Journal for the History of Astronomy, as well as several monographs and numerous papers in conference proceedings. He has promoted archaeology through many public lectures and television appearances, and museum displays in the United States and Guatemala.
