Grounds for election

James Canton is Director of Wild Writing at the University of Essex. He is the author of several books including The Oak Papers (2020) which was Radio 4 Book of the Week in August 2020. His writing is focused on the landscape and grapples with the relationship between humanity and nature, the present and the past. His work engages directly with history, notably in Out of Essex: Re-imagining a Literary Landscape (2013) and he has a remarkable facility for grasping and incorporating into his writing the full complexity of modern archaeological research as in Ancient Wonderings: Journeys into Prehistoric Britain (2017) and Grounded: A Journey into the Landscapes of our Ancestors (2023). In addition to his books, he has published articles in the national press and regularly appears on radio and television.
