Grounds for election
Oren Margolis (UEA) is a scholar of the Renaissance, whose interests include book history, art history, epigraphy, and the history of history-writing. Following his DPhil (Oxford), he was a junior researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies (Austria) before becoming departmental lecturer at Somerville College, Oxford. During this time he curated Aldus Manutius: The Struggle and the Dream (Bodleian Library). His latest book, Aldus Manutius: The Invention of the Publisher (2023), is the first English-language monograph on the Venetian printer in over 40 years. Other important publications treat the Florentine cartolaio Vespasiano da Bisticci and Erasmian paintings of Hans Holbein. He has been recognised with fellowships from Villa I Tatti (Florence), the British School at Rome, and the Leverhulme Trust. His current work is on the Christian epigraphy of Rome, c. 590–1870. He is also leader of the Jurnet’s House project for Jewish heritage in Norwich.
