Dan Elsworth has been involved in the archaeology of Cumbria for over 30 years. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and obtained an MA (Hons) in 1998. Working in Lancaster Archaeological Unit from 1999, he established Greenlane Archaeology at Ulverston in 2005. He has completed over 500 projects and has interests ranging from the Mesolithic to Industrial archaeology and standing buildings. He has published over twenty articles and books on subjects ranging from medieval urban archaeology to the only UK excavation of an entire late 19th century steam corn mill, as well as placenames and aspects of the Early Medieval period in Cumbria. He has, or is currently, serving on committees of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group, Cumbria Industrial History Society and Ulverston Civic Society. He also manages Sir John Barrow Cottage Museum, birthplace of the second secretary to the admiralty in the earlier 19th century.
