Natale Barca is an independent scholar and author of numerous books on the history of Roman Italy. Natale Barca worked for many years in the Italian civil service, where he served in a number of senior legal and cultural roles. Even before his retirement in 2017 he had begun to write books on ancient Egypt, the ancient Near East and ancient Rome. He is the author of 15 books, a number of which have appeared in English. These include studies of corruption in Rome, and of the careers of Marius, the Gracchi, the Sicilian Slave wars and the fall of the Roman Republic. His journalism frequently draws connections between current affairs and the Roman past. Barca has been an academic visitor in Berkeley (2013) and at the ICS (2018) and is a member of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies.
