Megan Leyland specialises in the country house and gender history. She has a strong interest in community engagement and telling more diverse and inclusive histories at heritage sites. Since joining English Heritage in 2015 she has conducted research on, and contributed to onsite and online interpretation initiatives for, sites including Richmond Castle, Ranger’s House, Bolsover Castle and Kirby Hall. She was the project historian for the £8 million Marble Hill Revived project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund. One strand of this project involved researching and incorporating into a new interpretation Marble Hill’s connections to colonial and enslavement histories. This also resulted in the youth community engagement project From all Angles which sought to explore the different histories the mahogany staircase at Marble Hill can tell about craftsmanship, sustainability and the human cost of harvesting mahogany in the 18th century.
