Dr Hann combines rigorous academic research on the materiality of the past with a commitment to public history. Since joining English Heritage in 2007 he has worked on major presentation projects at Wrest Park, Audley End, Osborne House, Eltham Palace and Belsay Hall. As EH lead for external academic engagement he has led on the collaborative doctoral programme (4 students supervised to completion) and on research volunteering. His research contributes to debates around country houses, particularly their links with transatlantic slavery. In 2013 he co-edited with Madge Dresser Slavery and the British Country House (2013). He works extensively with volunteers in all his projects and uses blogs, podcasts and other media to communicate research to a wider audience. His own research underpins English Heritage’s highly successful You Tube series on the Audley End cook, Avis Crocombe and his recent volume (with Annie Gray), How to Cook the Victorian Way with Mrs Crocombe (2020).
