Grounds for election
Dr Alessandro Bianchi received a PhD in Japanese literature from Cambridge in 2015, with a thesis on eighteenth-century political satire. He has since worked for higher-education institutions in Britain and the US. He began his career at the British Library, before holding a curatorial position at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, and later teaching at Haverford College as Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese Culture. He became the Bodleian Japanese Librarian in 2019 and Head of World Collections at Cambridge University Library in 2023. Alessandro is a visiting researcher at the Art Research Centre (Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto) and a subject specialist (Cultore della Materia) in Global Book History at La Sapienza University in Rome. He has lectured and published extensively on book history and print culture, with a focus on book design and the arts of the book in Japan. He is a member of the Council of the Bibliographical Society.
