Grounds for election

Dr Alex Burghart read History at Christ Church Oxford (1996-9), and, under Dame Professor Janet Nelson’s supervision, wrote a PhD on ‘The Mercian Polity 716–918’ at King’s College London, focusing on charters surviving from the kingdom of Mercia (2007, no corrections). He was a core member of the research team, funded by the AHRC, that produced the Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England, in the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at KCL, collaborating with Professor Simon Keynes. He is currently working with Professor George Garnett and Dr Alan Thacker on bringing to press the unpublished works of Professor James Campbell (d. 2016), on the Anglo-Saxon State. Alex writes regularly for the Times Literary Supplement, as well as The Spectator and BBC History on historical topics, especially the early middle ages. He is currently Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office, previously a minister in the Department for Education. He was elected as MP for Brentwood and Ongar in June 2017.
