Dr James is Honorary Research Fellow and Tutor in History, St Stephen’s House, Oxford and was Visiting Professor, University of the Western Cape in 2017. He is an historian of nineteenth-century religion in Britain and the British Empire who has published several distinguished monographs, beginning with a ground-breaking study of the Catholic Bishop George Errington, involving new primary source discoveries. In the course of writing a commissioned general history of the Cowley Fathers (a worldwide Anglican religious Order), he was Director of the Cowley Project, 2015-19. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Asiatic Society; he is also Deputy Editor of the Catholic Herald. His historical publications and research demonstrate a lively awareness of the physical context and material culture aspects of his subject.
