Grounds for election

Dr Marion Dowd, a prehistorian, is one of the leading scholars on the archaeology of caves in Europe, her expertise ranging from their prehistory to their use as hide-outs in the Irish revolutionary period. She has also research interests in Irish folklore and its material expressions. Dr Dowd is the author of three books, three edited books, and author of numerous journal papers and book chapters. Her first book, The Archaeology of Caves in Ireland (2015, Oxbow Books), won both the Current Archaeology ‘Book of the Year 2016’ Award and the ‘Tratman Award 2015’. Her edited book, Underground Archaeology: Studies on Human Bones and Artefacts from Ireland’s Caves (2016, Oxbow Books) was shortlisted for the ‘Tratman Award 2016’. Her edited book Bergsvik, K.A. and Dowd, M. 2018. Caves and Ritual in Medieval Europe, AD 500-1500. Oxbow Books, Oxford is a key work. She has led many archaeological projects and has directed and published significant excavations on caves and elsewhere
