Grounds for election

Dr Watson’s research area is Reformation Europe, centred on Germany and visual culture. She was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz in 2017-2018. She taught at King’s College London in 2016-2017, and at Oxford University in 2018-2023 (attached to Balliol, Mansfield and Oriel colleges). She has worked with archives and libraries in Württemberg and elsewhere, studying as well churches and monuments. Publications include ‘Shells and grottoes in early modern Germany’ and ‘Remembering and forgetting the dead in the churches of Reformation Germany’, both in edited volumes. Her article ‘Funeral monuments, ritual and print: memorialisation at the Württemberg Court’ appeared in ‘Past & Present’ in 2017. Her book, ‘The Beauty of Belief: decorating the Württemberg church during the Reformation’ will be published by Brill in the summer of 2024. She has been commissioned by Ashgate to write ‘The Reformation in 50 Objects’.
