Richard has been Keeper of Technologies and Engineering at the Science Museum since 2019, having previously worked in curatorial and interpretation roles in institutions including Royal Museums Greenwich (14 years), English Heritage, the British Museum, Ragged School Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He has also been a tutor in museum studies for the University of Leicester since 2002. He has published on topics in the histories of navigation, astronomy, scientific instruments, astrology and museum collections. His publications include The Telescope: A Short History (2009), Finding Longitude (2014, with Rebekah Higgitt), Navigational Instruments (2016) and a forthcoming multi-author history of the British Board of Longitude, as well as edited volumes, journal articles and book chapters. He has curated exhibitions including Ships, Clocks & Stars: The Quest for Longitude at Royal Museums Greenwich (2014) and been involved in the creation of numerous museum displays.
