Dr Takayanagi is a noted historian of parliament and women from c. 1850-1950, specialising in the history of the parliamentary franchise; women’s suffrage; women staff in parliament; and legislation affecting women’s lives and gender equality. Her numerous publications include 10 peer reviewed articles and 6 book chapters, and most recently the co-authored 'Necessary Women: the Untold Story of Parliament’s Working Women' (2023). An advisory editor of the ODNB for 27 new articles on women and parliament, she is an accomplished speaker and in-demand broadcaster on her areas of expertise. During her career as an archives professional she has made an important contribution to developing public services and outreach in the Parliamentary Archives. She co-curated a major exhibition in Westminster Hall, 'Voice and Vote: Women’s Place in Parliament', in 2018, and has been honoured by the Historical Association for her ‘significant contribution to the promotion and knowledge of history’.
