Civil servant (retired); Cathedral Fabric Commission, vice chair; and trustee, Friends of Friendless Churches, et al.

Grounds for election

Sir Paul Britton's lifelong dedication to the preservation and interpretation of historic buildings was ignited by Sir Nicholas Pevsner at Cambridge. Following a long and distinguished civil service career that included senior roles in the Cabinet Office, in retirement Sir Paul serves as vice-chair of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, and chairs its committee which makes appointments to cathedral Fabric Advisory Committees. He is chairman of the Canterbury Diocesan Advisory Committee, and vice-chairman of the National Churches Trust (chairing its grants committee 2016-23). He has been a trustee of the Friends of Friendless Churches since 2012. Sir Paul’s deep knowledge of historic buildings together with his understanding of policy and the institutional, political and social contexts for tangible heritage enable him to make a significant contribution to the conservation and understanding of British architecture.
