He is an authority of international standing on the Roman army and, in particular, Roman military equipment. Editor of the Journal of Roman Military Equipment. He has written extensively on the Roman army including Roman Military Equipment from the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome (with J. C. N. Coulston) (London 1993 & 2006); Corbridge. Excavations of the Roman fort and town 1947-1980 (With J. Dore) (London 1988); Excavations at Corbridge. The Hoard (with L.Allason-Jones) (London 1988); Finds from Roman Aldborough (Oxford 1996); Lorica Segmentata Volume 1: A Handbook of Articulated Roman Plate Armour, JRMES Monograph 1 (Chirnside 2002) and many other papers.
