Grounds for election

Professor Charles Withers holds the Ogilvie Chair of Geography at the University of Edinburgh. He is one of Britain's leading historical geographers. His work falls into two distinct fields: the historical geography of language and identity, and the history of cultures of geographical knowledge. He has focused on the cultural representation of Highland and Gaelic Scotland, with an emphasis on language, mapping and memory; and on the different analytic spaces in which geographical knowledge was constructed, received and debated in the 18th century. His books include Placing the Enlightenment: thinking geographically about the Age of Reason (2007); Georgian geographies: essays on space, place and landscape in the eighteenth century, edited with Miles Ogborn (2004); Geography, science and national identity: Scotland since 1520 (2001). His recent research projects include The Geography and History of the Prime Meridian and Geography, Technology and Instruments of Exploration c 1780 - 1960
