Lesley read History at Sussex before completing a doctorate, ‘History, Politics and Tradition’, at Birmingham. Until 2020 she was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Canterbury Christ Church University, where she remains Honorary Research Fellow. She co-created and directed several community heritage projects, including ‘A Town Unearthed: Folkestone Before 1500’, which included re-excavation of Folkestone Roman villa and study of the villa’s discoverer, S. E. Winbolt; and ‘Finding Eanswythe: The Life and Afterlife of an Anglo-Saxon Saint’, which culminated in the verification of the saint’s relics. Since being ordained in the Church of England she has continued her work in the heritage sector and remains a passionate advocate for engaging and involving diverse communities with all aspects of their past. She is a member of the Methodist Heritage Committee and Canterbury Diocesan Advisory Committee. She has published several journal articles and chapters on antiquarianism.
