Grounds for election

Mike is Associate Professor in Medieval English Literature at the University of Southampton and has held posts at UCL, Oxford, and Birkbeck, before joining Canterbury Christ Church University (2012-18) and then Birkbeck (2018-23). Mike’s research focusses on the intersections of textual and material culture in relation to landscapes and environment in the medieval world. He is author of Trees in the Religions of Early Medieval England (2015), Settlements and Strongholds in Early Medieval England: Texts, Landscapes, and Material Culture (2020), and co-author of Landscapes and Environments of the Middle Ages (2023) as well as over 20 research papers and book chapters. He is also the joint editor of 8 multi-authored books, the series ‘Nature and Environment in the Middle Ages’ (Boydell and Brewer), and the journal Medieval Ecocriticisms. He is a member of the Viking Society for Northern Research, the Society for Medieval Archaeology and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
