Mr Archer has supported and promoted community archaeology initiatives in Clydesdale since the 1970s. He was Chairman and committee member of Lanark and District Archaeological Society 1974-2022, Trustee of Lanark Museum from 1995, Chairman of Lanarkshire Museum Forum from 2018 and Secretary of the WIlliam Wallace Celebration Committee in the 1990s, and is currently a member of the Royal Burgh of Lanark Community Council. He successfully campaigned to protect the New Lanark Buffer Zone from quarrying, 2010. He has taught archaeology at various levels and has undertaken much fieldwork. He secured £6,300 of Lottery money to run a joint project with Lanark Museum called the Lanark Story, involving not only school children but older members of the community. Through his many and diverse activities - educational, advocational, publications, contributing to policy formulation etc. - he has made a significant contributon to the archaeology and history of Clydesdale.
