The books I’ve written include the first major English-language biography of the 16th-century cartographer, Mercator and The Making of the British Landscape, which described Britain’s 12,000-year story from the end of the ice age to the present. I’m currently researching a book on the history of British routeways, paths, tracks and roads, from the Mesolithic to city pavements. My research has involved a wide range of sources, from antique maps to archaeological reports and from academic papers to books written by leading historians and geographers. I have presented over 80 factual BBC TV documentaries related to geography and history and continue to engage in public speaking, for example, last week in Boulogne, on the subject of shared histories and geologies between the chalklands of Kent and Pas de Calais, and next week on historical geography at the British Library. I’m a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (and past President) and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
