Grounds for election
Friedman, an extremely distinguished scholar, gave paper at the SAL's "Queer(ing) Space(s)" conference in October 2024. She has pioneered underrepresented research on marginalised figures in architectural history (chiming with the SAL's ED&I remit). She has authored numerous books/articles on domestic architecture, women’s history and patronage in the USA and Europe, including: House and Household in Elizabethan England: Wollaton Hall and the Willoughby Family (1989); "Architecture, Authority, and the Female Gaze: Planning and Representation in the Early Modern Country House", Assemblage (1992); Women and the Making of the Modern House: A Social and Architectural History (1998); American Glamour and the Evolution of Modern Architecture (2010) and Queer Moderns: Max Ewing's Jazz Age New York (2025, forthcoming). Friedman is a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Historians and the Guggenheim Foundation, and Rhea S. Hederman Visiting Critic/Resident at the American Academy in Rome.
