Dr Bryant is the leading authority in the UK on the history of caricatures and cartoons, from 1700 to the present day, and enjoys an international reputation. As a pioneer in establishing the serious study of the subject he has written eighteen books and curated nineteen exhibitions (with their catalogues), in Europe and the UK, and acted as an officer of various bodies, for example, as Secretary and Vice-President of the British Cartoonists Association and trustee of the Cartoon Museum. He is an Advisory Editor to the ODNB, for which he has written fifty entries. Books include: The Comic Cruikshank; Dictionary of British Cartoonists & Caricaturists, 1730–1980; Dictionary of 20th-Century British Cartoonists & Caricaturists; Napoleonic Wars in Cartoons; World War I in Cartoons; Wars of Empire in Cartoons
