Grounds for election
Dr D’Maris Coffman’s PhD dissertation on The Fiscal Revolution of the Interregnum: Excise Taxation in the British Isles, 1643-1663 constituted a major advance in our understanding of government and finance in the seventeenth century. She has developed this important work further in monographs published by Palgrave Macmillan and Cambridge University Press, and in numerous articles and chapters in edited volumes. Dr Coffman has also made a substantial contribution to the literature of the excise in the eighteenth century and the regulation of corn markets up to the nineteenth century. These are subjects of fundamental importance to our understanding of the history of modern Britain. As Director of the Centre for Financial History at Newnham College, Cambridge, Dr Coffman has brought together historians and economists to further our understanding of financial history. She has edited numerous volumes on the subject and organized many major research projects.
