BA Hons, Literae Humaniores, Oxford University; BA Hons, MPhil, PhD, Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic, Cambridge University

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Medieval & Modern Languages, Oxford University

Grounds for election

After reading for a degree in Classics at Oxford Dr Bonner worked in television for 15 years, becoming a studio director, before studying Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic in Cambridge, where she gained her PhD in that department, working on the manuscript transmission of Pelagius’ 'Letter to Demetrias'. She is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow and is preparing a critical edition of this same letter by Pelagius, for which she is studying the 140 odd manuscripts held across Europe. Her work has focused on Pelagius and Faustus of Riez, two British authors of the fifth century who wrote in Latin, and her overall interest lies in British history from the fifth century to the Conquest. She has published on St Patrick & Pelagius, and the manuscript transmission of Pelagius’ works. Further areas of expertise lie in palaeography & textual criticism; she has taught Latin in Cambridge, and currently teaches Medieval Welsh in Oxford. She is just finishing a book, 'The myth of Pelagianism'.
