Grounds for election

John Considine is a historian of learned texts, with a special interest in lexicography. His publications include Dictionaries in Early Modern Europe (CUP, 2008) and Academy Dictionaries 1600-1800 (CUP, 2014); he has recently completed a sequel to these, with the provisional title Small dictionaries and curiosity in post-medieval Europe, and is now working on fifteenth-century English dictionaries. He has edited several collective volumes, and (with Sylvia Brown) has written two illustrated catalogues of exhibitions of annotated early modern books. He contributed twenty notices to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He was an assistant editor of the Oxford English Dictionary until 1996, and has since then acted as a consultant to the dictionary, specializing in sixteenth-century English and post-classical Latin.
