Grounds for election

Following a long and active research career at UCL, Washington State and UBC, Prof. Collard holds a major position at Simon Fraser University as Canada Research Chair in Human Evolutionary Studies. A leading and widely published international expert in the field, Prof Collard has worked in depth on the processes driving human cultural evolution, applied across a wide range of geographical and temporal contexts. These include the origin and evolution of the genus Homo, the reconstruction of fossil hominin and non-human primate phylogenetic relationships, and the estimation of body mass, stature and age from skeletal material. In addition, he uses methods and theory from evolutionary biology to investigate archaeologically - and ethnographically - documented patterns of material culture variation. Current research is looking at technological richness and complexity in small-scale societies, and at the cooperative components present in the construction of organised religions.
