Grounds for election
John Cooper is a historian of 16th-century politics and religion, with a close interest in the art and architecture of the Tudor period. His doctorate and first book (Oxford) examined royal propaganda and regional culture in 16th-century England. His second book, a study of Sir Francis Walsingham, was published by Faber and serialised for BBC Radio 4. He is Principal Investigator of the AHRC-funded project ‘St Stephen’s Chapel Westminster: Visual and Political Culture 1292-1941’, a three-year collaboration between the U of York and the Palace of Westminster exploring the medieval royal chapel and pre-1834 Commons chamber. He worked with the Royal Armouries on their 2009 Henry VIII exhibition, and co-edited the accompanying book. He has given public lectures at the Tower of London, Hampton Court and the National Maritime Museum, and has spoken as several literary festivals. He writes regularly for the Times Literary Supplement and Literary Review as well as academic journals.
