Grounds for election

Dr Isaksen is a leading figure in the field of digital humanities with special reference to the ancient world, archaeology and the history of cartography. He leads and and supports research on several Digital Humanities-related projects including Pelagios, (an international project which seeks to create a geo-tagged dataset of classical names to be found in surviving historical and geographical texts), HESTIA (The Herodotus Encoded Space-Text-Image Archive) and Google Ancient Places. He has secured substantial funding for Pelagios from the Andrew H Mellon foundation and for Hestia from the AHRC. Having secured an MA in Philosophy at Cambridge, he obtained an M.Sc in archaeological computing and a PH.D. in computer studies, while working as a senior researcher with Oxford Archaeology and the University;s Classics department.. He took up his present role at Southampton University in 2011.
