Charles Donahue is a leading expert on the history of law in the Middle Ages. He has written widely on the history of common law and canon law: his publications number well over a hundred. He is one of the pioneers in the study of medieval church courts not only in finding and identifying their existing records but also in his studies of particular courts such as the Court of Canterbury. His recent study on marriage litigation - 'Law, Marriage and Society in the Later Middle Ages' - compares cases brought before five different courts and is described by one commentator 'as a great empirical breakthrough in research on family structure in England and France.' Professor Donahue has held many professional offices in learned societies, including the Selden Society, the Ames Foundation and the American Society for Legal History.
