Keeper of Prehistory, Livingstone Museum, Zambia, 1959-65, where he was deeply involved in multidisciplinary African history and monuments conservation. Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara, 1967-2003. He has devoted over 40 years to communicating archaeology and the past to general audiences through lecturing, writing, radio, TV, and other media. Author of more than 40 books, he is one of the world’s leading archaeological and historical writers. His general archaeology works include The Rape of the Nile and Return to Babylon and numerous textbooks on prehistory. Two books on N. American archaeology are standard works. Best known to wider audiences for works on ancient climate change and human societies, the history of water and on rising sea levels, which have involved demanding multidisciplinary research and outreach far beyond archaeologists. He is a remarkable ambassador for archaeology and a most influential voice for the past internationally.
