Grounds for election
Dr Susanna Avery-Quash is a highly regarded art historian, currently Senior Research Curator (History of Collecting) at the National Gallery, London. After taking her first degree at Cambridge in Modern Languages, she studied Art History at the Courtauld before returning to Cambridge to write a PhD thesis on Sir Henry Cole, first Director of the South Kensington Museum. She has gone on to study Sir Charles Eastlake, President of the Royal Society and first Director of the National Gallery. Recent exhibitions include ‘Art for the Nation: Sir Charles Eastlake at the National Gallery’ (2011). She is responsible for developing and promoting the Gallery’s research strategy and collaborates both nationally and internationally; an engaging speaker, she is always keen to share her enthusiasm and expertise. Publications include (with J.Sheldon), Art for the Nation: The Eastlakes and the Victorian Art World (London 2011) and more than 30 articles or reviews on art- and collecting history.
