Completed her doctorate in 1990, published as Mumienporträts – Chronologie und kultureller Kontext (Mainz 1996) and her Habilitation, Der Logos des Mythos – Allegorien und Personifikationen in der frühen griechischen Kunst (München 2002), both at Heidelberg, where she worked at the Archaeological Institute and Museum until 2004, when she was appointed to a chair at the University of Exeter. Her other books include Antiken Skulpturen in Castle Howard (with K. Fittschen and A. Linfert, Wiesbaden 2005), and most recently the ground-breaking Crisis and ambition. Tombs and burial customs in third-century CE Rome (Oxford 2013). She is also editor and contributor to the important collection of papers in Paideia: The World of the Second Sophistic (Berlin 2004). A second-century prequel to Crisis and Ambition is in press, and a major new Leverhulme-funded project integrating social, economic, topographical and spatial analysis in a study of the Roman suburbium is in progress.
