Did his doctorate at Oxford on Renaissance reconstructions of Roman temples and worked for Historic buildings in Scotland and in Rome on the Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture known to the Renaissance before joining Edinburgh College of Art, where he was promoted to a chair in 2005. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and a trustee of Scottish Church Heritage Research and other charitable architectural organisations, he is the leading authority in the English-speaking world on the work of the architect/antiquary Pirro Ligorio (1513-88). In 2011 he was appointed a member of the Commissione per l'Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Pirro Ligorio and has just completed an edition of the Oxford (Talman) Ligorio album. Among his other publications are The Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Part A. IX. Roman Topography and Architecture, 3 vols (London 2004) and important articles on the reception of classical architecture in northern Europe.
