During nearly 35 years’ service in Hull Museums and since his retirement in 2008 Arthur Credland has made an outstanding contribution to the study of maritime history, arms and armour (especially archery equipment) and the local history of Hull and the East Riding. He has nearly 100 publications, over 60 of them articles in academic journals, including the Journal of the Arms & Armour Society, the Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries, The Royal Armouries Yearbook, and Arms & Armour (the journal of the Royal Armouries). He has also published several books and monographs, including 'Hull marine paintings through three centuries' (1993) and (with Gordon Bell) 'Victorian ships … ' (2011). He has served on the councils of the Nautical Research Society, the Society of Archer-Antiquaries (Chairman 1984-2002), the East Yorkshire Local History Society and the Hull Maritime Society (retired as Chairman 2014). In 2010 he was appointed MBE for ‘services to maritime history’.
