Lifelong involvement with archaeology, excavating since the ageof 7 Member of Sussex Archaeological Society since 1970. Occasional speaker on Archaeology of Sussex. Co-directed Warwick University excavation at Baginton Roman Fort whilst at Warwick University. Thesis on origins of Roman viticulture in England. Founding member of All Party Parliamentary Group for Archaeology with Lord Redesdale and Lord Renfrew, currently vice-chairman. Currently Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group for the British Museum. Participated on Parliamentary cultural delegations, especially Tunisia, Ethiopia and Syria to promote archaeological heritage. Served on various Parliamentary committees including ‘Dealing in Cultural Objects Bill,’ National Heritage Bill and amendments to ‘Treasure Act.’ Active lobbyist for Portable Antiquities Scheme and worked with Ministers on protection of Mesopotamian sites during Iraq conflict.
