David Rundle is a scholar of the earliest era in the history of our nation's antiquarian tradition. A lecturer at Oxford and the University of Essex (and lecturing widely overseas also) he is well known as an expert in the study of the humanist tradition in the British Isles in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. He has published widely on the subject, offering forensic investigation of the circulation of ideas in Renaissance Europe through close study of the palaeography and codicology of surviving manuscripts. The results are both a mapping of the movement of individual texts, providing a reconstruction of the cultural geography of humanist Europe, and a series of pen-portraits of scribes and book-owners brought back to life through attention to the material aspects of the books the produced and collected. . As an historian of manuscripts, he is also well-versed in the traditions of book-collecting and the changing nature of libraries.
