Formerly Director of Fairfax House, an outstanding 18th century town house museum in York, Peter Brown is currently Director of the parent charity York Civic Trust. A pioneer of contextual displays in period houses, he has written extensively on aspects of material culture and presentation in the English Country House. As curator of numerous exhibitions in York, Norwich and London and author of eight accompanying catalogues, such as 'Views of York: portrait of a City 1610 to present day' (2012) he has effectively fostered interest in and understanding of material culture and has contributed widely to symposia on 18th century culture in Britain, Europe and the United States. An expert assessor on the Government's Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of art and a member of the Fabric Committee for Durham Cathedral, Brown is currently working on a book about Georgian York which charts the influence of Lord Burlington's circle of amateur architects, artists and supporters.
