As Minister for Planning and Heritage Protection (2005-9) and Chairman of English Heritage (2004-13) she made a nationally important contribution to the recognition of the importance of protecting our historic built heritage. She has also served as President of the Friends of Lewes, as a member of the Council of the Sussex Archaeological Trust and as a trustee of the National Museum of Wales.
