Hajnalka Herold is Lecturer in Historical Archaeology at the Department of Archaeology, University of Exeter, specialising in the early medieval period (AD 400–1100). From 2002 to 2013 she was Research Associate at the Institute of Archaeological Science, University of Vienna, and held postdoctoral fellowships at Oxford as well as in Switzerland and Germany. She obtained her PhD at the University of Vienna in 2002 and her Diploma at the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest in 1999. Her recent work has included the study of élite settlements in central Europe from the 9th and 10th centuries AD, particularly as a crossroads between the Carolingian and the Byzantine worlds, the investigation of aspects of the archaeology of the Avar Khaganate and its relation to former Roman sites, as well as the examination of connections between the production technology of early medieval artefacts and the identity of their producers/users.
