Grounds for election

The leading antiquarian and conservationist of Malta and Gozo who has campaigned resolutely for the protection and interpretation of the archaeology, UNESCO monuments and wildlife on the island of Gozo, working closely with Dr. David Trump FSA since the 1950s, and more recently with other scholars. He founded the first archaeological and environmental protection societies, acting largely successfully to preserve important monuments in the face of considerable political opposition. He has published widely on the discovery and history of the major monuments of Gozo (notably Ggantija, the Brochtorff Xaghra Circle and windmills) and on major local artists (eg Busuttil and Gauci), particularly those involved in depicting major archaeological monuments in the nineteenth century. For many years he served on the Committee of Guarantees of Heritage Malta, on the Council of Din L-Art Helwa (Malta National Trust) and on the Heritage Advisory Committee of the Planning Authority.
